Broxtowe Super Sprint Triathlon by Rob Cogings

I took part in the Broxtowe Super Sprint Tri, the first time I had attempted this distance. This event together with a Sprint Triathlon and a Duathlon later in the summer are organised by Broxtowe Borough Council. The events are very good value for money and I only paid just over £30 for all 3 events. Various running events and even a racketathlon are also available. The emphasis seems to be on getting people to participate in sport and so they are great for novices. You can sign up for the races via the Broxtowe Council website.

The Super Sprint event was based at Kimberley Leisure centre not far from Ikea near the A610. Plenty of parking was available and the registration was simple. The facilities at the centre are very good and the hot clean showers at the end of the race were very welcome. Two race briefings were available with lots of good advice from the organiser and BTF Referee. The swim was 200m in a 20m pool and I swam in my own lane for the whole of the swim section. There was quite a long run to transition but it was on grass and well swept tarmac paths. The bike leg was only 7km on good roads which were well marshalled and signposted. The 2km run section was all on grass, being 3 laps of a few football pitches. I finished 12th in 30:07

There were not many people from triathlon clubs taking part with a lot of people doing a triathlon for the first time.

Stuweb provided chip timing which added to the organisation of the event.

I couldn’t find anything to grumble about with the race or the overall organisation. It all worked well and was very good value for money. You can find information on next years events and all the other races at http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=7783 . If you are nervous about bigger events this is definitely one to have a go at.
